From a lockout workout with the team, to the Niners drafting of Colin Kaepernick, the vitality of Alex Smith in a San Francisco jersey has been in question. That is all coming to an end now.
The NFL lockout has been lifted, making football fans all over the nation drool with the possibilities that lay in free agency.
An NBC Sport report sounds optimistic that the 49ers were certain to bring back Alex Smith another year. The quarterback that just can?t seem to stick as the presumptive starter had this to say in the same report.
I?m not going to wait for anything. I?m excited for this to start ? waiting for that opportunity. I?m sure it?ll be pretty quick. I?m sure it?ll move fast. It?s pretty well set in stone, I think.
This is no time to get confident if you are Alex Smith however. The writing is very much on the wall. Consider this the last chance of what has been a multitude of chances.
The Niners had a feeling that Smith would one day be the type of star arm that has thrown in Candlestick before. Those dreams of the next Montana, Young or Garcia have washed away. Left is the hope that he will just be a consistent starter.
If he does falter, the Niners have a quarterback ready to take the snaps in Colin Kaepernick. The Nevada standout has received love from head coach, Jim Harbaugh. You can bet that Alex Smith will be brought back, but he will be teetering on the precipice.
One bad game, and Kaepernick will get his shot at greatness with the Niners. We are about to see what Smith looks like under the pressure of a new coach and new system. Things could get very ugly out in San Francisco.
